Why evening changes everything
An evening helicopter tour of New York is not the dark version of the daytime flight. The subject changes: instead of building details you see the light lines of the avenues, the illuminated bridges over the river, the skyscrapers lighting up one after another. The harbor turns dark and the Statue of Liberty is recognized by its torch. It is a more emotional than informative flight: you choose it for the atmosphere more than to identify individual buildings.
The daytime flight is the one that lets you understand the city. You see the street grid, the greenery of Central Park, the colors of the water, the details of rooftop terraces. If it is your first time in New York and you want to get your bearings, daylight helps you connect what you see from above with what you will walk in the following days. In the evening, instead, the city simplifies into shapes and lights, and many landmarks disappear into the dark.
In between is the sunset helicopter tour, when the light warms the glass of the skyscrapers and the sky over New Jersey colors. It is also the hardest to get right, because the sun does not always set at the same hour and New York weather changes fast. In the next sections you find the base schedules and month-by-month daylight, to understand when a booked flight can truly fall on that light.
Who flies when darkness falls
HeliNY offers evening flights from its Linden base in New Jersey.1 The base schedules say a lot: at Linden they fly from Friday to Monday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.2 At Downtown Manhattan Heliport, on the other hand, HeliNY flies from Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, so from Manhattan its flight remains a daytime flight.2
On the market you also find flights born for the evening. The night skyline tour starts at $275, with a small group of up to 6 passengers and a rating of 4.78 from 119 reviews. The operator, Zip Aviation, requires check-in 30 minutes before and sets a limit of 113 kg per passenger; the duration changes with the route, airspace restrictions, and weather. The listing does not indicate the minutes in the air: if that matters to you, ask before booking.
A second evening flight departs from Essex County Airport in New Jersey, lasts 25 minutes, and costs from $275. Getting there by public transport takes time: NJ Transit train from Penn Station to Little Falls or Wayne Route 23, then a 10-15 minute taxi ride, for a total of about 60-75 minutes. If you are flying in the evening, think about the return too: by the end of the flight it is fully dark, so it is best to have already decided how you will get back into the city.

Night flights depart from New Jersey, for example from Linden.1
This is the advice from FlyNYON for those photographing from above for the first time.3
Book with margin: on another flight the sunset is not guaranteed.
There are no Sunday flights from Manhattan, but there are from New Jersey.
For those photographing from above for the first time, we recommend a midday or morning flight, with plenty of light to capture the landmarks from above. For the more experienced photographer looking for a challenge, a sunset or later flight is an excellent choice.
As the sun sets, month by month
For sunset, the season matters. In mid-June in New York the sun stays above the horizon for 15.1 hours, in mid-December only 9.3 hours.4 In winter the darkness therefore arrives early, and HeliNY says so too: in the winter months the sun sets earlier, and this can affect the tour.5 A late afternoon flight in December may already encounter low light, while one at the same time in July is still in full daylight.
In the in-between months the difference is clear. In mid-March daylight lasts 11.8 hours, in mid-September 12.4 hours, in mid-October 11 hours.4 If sunset is your goal, check the exact sunset time for your date with a weather app, and book a flight that takes off shortly before. Remember that every option also has a check-in time to meet, so the departure time does not coincide with the time you arrive at the base.
However, there is one honest limitation to accept: no one can promise you the sunset. On another flight from Pier 6 the listing states clearly that the sunset view is not guaranteed. A blanket of clouds on the horizon or a late check-in, and the light you were hoping for is gone. If the sunset means everything to you, choose a date with some flexibility in your trip, so you can move the flight if the sky closes in.

Is it better by day or by night?
The classic question is whether a helicopter tour over New York is better by day or by night. HeliNY says that any time of day is good for flying, depending on the weather, and recommends booking based on your schedule because the weather is unpredictable.6 In other words: the flight you can take at ease, without rushing between a museum and a dinner, is worth more than the one at the perfect hour but squeezed in with difficulty.
For photography, FlyNYON's advice is clear. For those photographing from above for the first time, a morning or midday flight with plenty of light is recommended, while for those with experience a sunset or later flight is suggested as a challenge.3 At night you need long exposures and steady hands, inside a helicopter that vibrates and with the cabin glass reflecting the lights. Your phone does better than you think, but sharp photos come more easily in daylight.
The choice, in the end, depends on what you want to take home. If you are looking for a mental map of the city, choose daytime. If you are looking for a memory to tell about, the lights of Manhattan remain impressive even without perfect photos, and the evening flight becomes the story of your trip. And if your trip allows it, a daytime flight at the beginning and a visit to an observation deck in the evening give you both, without paying for a second flight.
The logistics of an evening flight
Evening departures are outside Manhattan, so the evening needs to be planned. From Linden HeliNY transports passengers with a van from the Linden NJ Transit station.7 For a flight from the same base, the listing for an autumn flight asks for check-in at least 50 minutes in advance and offers a shuttle from the station on request. Calculate the train time, the shuttle time, and the check-in: for an evening flight, leave Manhattan already in the late afternoon.
The HeliNY flight sold on this site offers, among its options, a flight from New Jersey, the New York City Skyline Tour, in addition to flights from Manhattan. The listing warns that not all flights depart from Manhattan and that the departure point depends on the option booked. Before paying, therefore, check where the option you choose departs from: it is the detail that changes the whole evening. A departure from New Jersey requires an extra train or taxi, one from Manhattan almost none, and the return time changes accordingly.
In the evening it gets cooler, especially over the water. In October the average low in New York is 10.5 °C, in November 5.3 °C.4 In the cabin you are sheltered, but the wait on the tarmac and the trip to the base are outdoors. Bring an extra layer you can leave in the locker, because on a HeliNY flight you are allowed only camera, phone, and sunglasses on board.8 A pair of comfortable shoes completes the picture.
Weather, clouds, and backup plans
Weather matters in the evening as much as during the day. Light rain that does not reduce visibility may still allow a flight, while heavy rain or fog can cancel the flight even at the last minute.9 In the evening haze is more noticeable: lights become halos and the view loses sharpness. Keep an eye on the forecasts in the days before and book when you still have flexibility in your trip. A clear evening after a storm, on the contrary, often delivers the best visibility.
Free cancellation helps. The nighttime skyline flight can be cancelled without charge up to 24 hours before; paying immediately is not necessary. The operator listing adds, however, that those who cancel within the last 24 hours, or who do not show up, pay the full amount. If the forecasts are uncertain, decide before that deadline and move the flight to another evening. Rescheduling in time costs little; waiting until the last minute, on the other hand, can cost you the entire flight.
Have a backup plan ready for the same evening: an observation deck, a sunset ferry ride, a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. That way, if the flight is cancelled, the evening is not lost. Remember also that from Manhattan no flights operate on Sundays, while departures from New Jersey are available: for those with only the weekend, a Sunday evening from New Jersey can be the only opportunity. Check the schedule for your date before setting the rest of the evening.
